Mohammed Esmaili, a well-known tombak player who learned his art and skill from Tehrani, was born in 1934 in Tehran. Led into this field through his own enthusiasm and the encouragement and guidance of his uncles (Morteza Gorgeenzadeh and Mustapha Gorgeenzadeh, trumpet and gharenay players), Esmaili went to the National High School of Music in 1951 where he began learning how to play the tombak from Hossein Tehrani. He made such significant progress that Tehrani introduced him to the General Bureau of the Fine Arts of Iran in 1958. He started working in some of the music bands of the time and later joined the tombak band of the General Bureau of the Fine Arts of Iran which was founded by Tehrani. Esmaili began giving lessons in the National High School of Music in 1964 and became the head of the tombak department; he trained many students and taught them the exercises of Tehrani's coursebook. He became the head of the tombak department of the Ministry of Culture and Art in 1966. Esmaili managed to compose many tombak pieces adopted from the melodies of Persian music and performed those pieces on several occasions in Tehran's Rudaki Hall always gaining a very warm reception.
Among his works is a piece called A Tribute to the Maestro, played by the tombak band with other Iranian instruments on a recital commemorating the works and the spirit of the late Hossein Tehrani. The melody of this piece is composed by the distinguished Maestro Faramarz Payvar.
To pay yet another tribute to the late Tehrani, Mohammed Esmaili has played all the exercise and group performances contained in Tombak Teaching Methodology. ...
