 Many consider dashti as the most effective kin of Iranian vocal music.
Dashti derives its name from the Farsi word "dasht meaning a broad piece of land especially those in the Province of Fars to the south and west of the city of Shiraz; both dashti music and dashti vocalists primarily come from this district" (Dehkhoda). It may well be correct to state that the most unceremonious kind of music in Iran are those which originate from dasht, that is the music of shepherds which is the sound of solitude: music whose only audience is its player. ...
